Remote Work: The New Way Of Working
Can you imagine a world in which you can work from home, without established hours and being able to fully reconcile your work activity with your personal life and family life? Well, this world is becoming less imaginary and more real. Today, thanks to new technologies and the Internet, it is possible for anyone, regardless of the time and place, to work in a company located on the other side of the world with the same efficiency as if they were in their offices. This, by the way, is known as remote work.
Is it possible to bring remote work to my work environment? What advantages can it bring to my company?
Advantages of remote work
Good acceptance by workers
Microsoft carried out a study in which it found that remote work programs make employees increase their productivity, and at the same time make them happier.
3,600 employees from 36 cities around the world participated in this study. 41% of the workers interviewed, collaborate with companies with remote work policies and are satisfied with them.
Another 15% of those interviewed consider that this type of work method is positive and wish they would incorporate it into their company.
Improved work performance
Another study, this time by SonicWall, states that 76% of employees who work remotely think they are more creative at home than at the office, and 26% consider themselves more motivated to work. Additionally, 61% of bosses believe remote workers are more productive.
International talent recruitment
In companies dedicated to specific sectors, it is difficult to find a worker with the exact profile to perform a job. If found, it is possible that the worker cannot accept the position because they live too far from the office or that the trips involve a high economic cost.
Remote work solves these problems. Companies can recruit the right employees for each position by having a search territory as large as the entire world and workers can find the desired position that best suits their training, even if it is in a localized company in another city or even in another country.
Flexibility of working hours
Today, more than ever, job performance is measured in productivity, not in time worked. As long as they have tools capable of quantifying the work performance of employees, the distribution of time they do does not matter.
Remote work allows each employee to organize their time in the way they consider most appropriate, to be able to dedicate themselves to work when they are productive and take breaks when they deem it necessary. Likewise, the free distribution of time makes work life more compatible with personal life and family life.
On the other hand, the savings in time and costs that transportation entails also allows an increase in the time available for work and leisure, both factors that increase productivity and quality of life.
Savings for companies: the space is also paid
A face-to-face worker requires an office where they can carry out their activity. This office has rental and maintenance costs: electricity, computers, cleaning services…
Remote workers represent great savings for the company since they work from their own home, using their computer and Internet connection. In some companies, workers are assigned some type of quota for office material expenses that they can freely dispose of, after justifying these expenses through invoices. In this way, the cost of office supplies is charged by the company, which, on the other hand, continues to save on rent and maintenance services.
There are multiple studies that quantify the savings that this would mean for companies. One of the most known was one carried out by Forbes magazine in 2013.
Collaborative work has never been so easy
The technological possibilities allow work to be shared in real-time and multiple people to make changes simultaneously.
This allows that, despite the fact that they may never have seen each other’s faces, the contact between the employers is closer than ever and they can make changes to their work at the times when they feel most creative.
Is remote work the future?
This is confirmed by studies carried out by different companies specialized in the sector.
A study by Intuit estimates that By 2020, approximately 40% of Americans will be freelancers or remote workers.
Another study carried out by The Economist Intelligence Unit, of the economic newspaper, The Economist, affirms that 78% of those interviewed, work or have worked in a remote team. Furthermore, among those who have not yet done so, 25% believe they will in the next few years.
